First Day of School and Birthday

Last Wednesday, January 30th was the first day of school for S. and all the other children at her school. Here she is with all 319 other kids in her school. Can you find her? (Hint: she's in the lower lefthand corner and has her hand on her cheek)
In Sydney every child must wear the uniform of their school. It's quite strict except S's school is in the process of changing their uniform which is why everyone in the previous photo is not wearing a blue hat yet. Here's S. in hers.
Some of the hallways in the school open up to the outdoors. To get to the "toilet" or "bubbler" (water fountain), students have to go outside. S. is in a mixed years 3-4 class. So, in New Haven she's in the middle of third grade. In Sydney, she's starting year four. Here's a picture of children S's age coming out of their classroom.
And two days later, S.turned 9! Do you like her "cake"?

Thank you to everyone who sent birthday greetings! It made a big difference.

We finally have a reliable internet service, so plan to be blogging more. We've done lots of exploring and can't wait to tell you about it. S., especially, would love comments. Thanks!

  1. It's funny to see it's so warm in Australia while it's kind of cold here in Connecticut. I like how the uniforms are so bright. Happy birthday!

  5. Hi Heather, Sylvia and Rick,

It's so great to see pictures of Sydney in the summer. Man do I miss Sydney. Make sure you guys go to Palm Beach at some point. It is a wonderful place. Also, what school is Sylvia going to? It looks like Forest Lodge School, but that would be too much of a coincidence.

    Keep the pictures coming!!

    As ever,
    Sarah

  6. Hello, Sylvia, Heather and Rick,
So glad you have your blog set up! Sylvia, your school looks lovely. Wearing a uniform makes it so easy to get ready for the day, doesn't it? And, I love the color (blue is one of my favorites :-) It reminds me of the sky on a gorgeous day. Hope you are making lots of new friends!

  7. Here is another try at posting my comment :)

We are so excited to follow your blog and learn about Australia!

Sylvia's birthday cake was wonderful - and we also enjoyed seeing again the t-shirt she was wearing in the picture (Sasha has the same one); it's a nice reminder of this past summer's festival on Orange street.

    Looking forward to more news!

    Love, Veronika and Sasha.

  10. I have a friend from high school who is living in Australia. His son's first day of school was last week, too! He had a uniform and hat, which was more like a "safari" hat. It seems that Australian's take their sun protection very seriously! :) So glad you have a blog to keep us posted. I'll show this to Emma soon!
